US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

A Few Intrinsic Motivation And Extrinsic Motivation Speech Marks

A few intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation speech marks

by

Mokuli Tiruni

In this particular review i’ll be telling you some intrinsic motivation elements , these intrinsic motivation are primarily based on a celebration happened in classroom .

This short article not merely tells about intrinsic motivation but also about extrinsic motivation . One among my summer time reads has become Daniel H. Pink’s guide _Drive: The Shocking Reality about What Motivates Us_. It really is for the most part an organisation book and is not actually that surprising (to me), but it does appear to existing an effective overview of recent trends in motivation concept, to wit: extrinsic motivation (carrots and sticks) falls short in a very number of strategies and may even decrease the quality and amount of what you are making, but employees (e.g. college students) who one. have autonomy, 2. delight in a sense of purpose/relatedness, and 3. are on a curve toward mastery operate more effective and therefore are significantly less probable to give up. I was hoping the book would benefit me with a thing that is been aggravating me from the classroom. While I’ve a varied work knowledge, the establishments I taught at ahead of this were in general all elite institutions with particularly keen, enthusiastic students. The college students I have at my existing R1 are much alot more regular of what I listen to to the fora: respectable children who will not especially like to browse or write, who skip course, and that are not considering lifelong grasping as a lot as just receiving the degree and moving on. The subject I train is fascinating, but as I understand from various conversations with students, it truly is an item that won’t as a rule immediately excite 21st century college students, who have a tendency to suppose it isn’t particularly appropriate to their lives, and it involves a honest total of energy to become “fluent” from the resources. When I first started off teaching right here, I worked under the assumption that college students would set forward a really good work toward looking through, investigation, writing, and essential contemplating, because these pursuits are inherently remarkable (or had been for me and my preceding students) and because that “flow” is so fulfilling if you hit it. But I quickly had to regress to day by day response assignments and pop quizzes, frequent exams, and laboriously structured assignments. Such as, I’ve to spell out repeatedly that pupils has to use immediate quotations from the major resource texts in doing an argument. Once a while, I recognized I have to assign a position value that may be misplaced from the total, or they simply dismiss the make any difference of proof entirely. I also have peculiar boundaries/requrements about the investigation paper, made to make it easy for independence of subject though doing plagiarism a great deal much less probably. Now, regardless, looking at Pink, I’m realizing that in response to my frustrations, I’ve slipped into what may be experienced as an basically totally carrot/stick arrangement, the place pupils are on the rather brief leash during the semester: I help a fair quantity of independence inside the explore topic, which they arrive up with on their very own, however the steps/assignments along the way in which are painfully specific, as if I you should not trust the pupils to do an excellent task on their own. Very well, I will not trust them, from repeated and sad expertise. As a matter of fact, my existing default setting re: my current students is added or less copybook old-school determination, as explained by Pink: “The notion of management (which is, management of people…) is made on several assumptions with regards to the elementary natures of people getting managed. It presumes that to get action or move forward, we will want a prod — that absent a reward or punishment, we’d continue to be happily and inertly in site. What’s more, it presumes that after citizens do get moving, they really want path — that with out a firm and reliable information, they’d wander.” Now I am wondering if I could get more suitable results from backing off or restructuring? What have you completed that aids accessibility that interior “curious and self-directed” self within each individual pupil, even the non-inspired or distracted pupil? Besides “read and create whichever you need anytime you choose,” certainly. [N.B. I recognise that several of the variation may just be attributed towards the undeniable fact that the majority of my students operate — of necessity, for some, or to fund their lattes, iPhones, designer bags, manicures, and BMWs, for other individuals — but I and almost all of my acquaintances in college also worked a minimum of 20 hrs every week as well as taking on similarly demanding extracurriculars, and it appears to me that our capability to accessibility that innate interest/curiosity in our classes developed it a lot easier fairly than more difficult to juggle our ridiculous schedules] .

NASA van rolls off California mountain

Wednesday, December 8, 2004

LOS ANGELES — A commuter van (Van Pool No. 36) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) plunged 200 feet into a ravine in the Angeles National Forest this morning. The van was carrying ten people: six JPL employees, two NASA employees, and two private contractors. They are identified as:

 • Javier Bautista: Regular Substitute Driver
 • Cheryl Lynn Allworth: Executive Secretary in JPL’s Space Experiments Systems Section
 • Dorothy M. Forks: JPL Human Resources
 • Peter Robles
 • Helga Maria Wurm
 • Jane F. Galloway: JPL Business Manager
 • Kerri Lynn Agey: Contractor for JPL Security Services
 • Christopher Butts
 • Jim Kitahara
 • David Myers

Three of the passengers — Forks, Galloway, and Agey — lost their lives; the remaining seven sustained various levels of injury, including one passenger suffering critical injury, according to authorities. All victims were airlifted to local area hospitals.

According to witnesses who reported the crash, the van simply drove off the side of Angeles Forest Highway. Despite the presence of fog during the accident, the California Highway Patrol believes that this was not a factor. The CHP has said that the investigation into the crash may take two to three days before the cause is known.

JPL spokesperson D.C. Agle confirmed that the van was from the facility. Initially, JPL refrained from commenting, but JPL security was spotted at the site shortly after the incident occurred.

The Angeles Forest Highway is a two-lane mountain road considered a commuter route for many residents of the Antelope Valley including Palmdale and Lancaster residents. It is an alternative to get to Interstate 210, rather than taking the heavily traveled Antelope Valley Freeway (California State Route 14).

Wikipedia founder embroiled in affair and financial allegations

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

The implosion of a relationship between Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and journalist Rachel Marsden has resulted in controversy and international headlines. Associated Press and ABC News have also reported on questionable activity by Wales involving Wikimedia Foundation expenses. The Wikimedia Foundation is a donor-supported non-profit organization which runs Wikipedia.

Marsden had contacted Wales two years ago about concerns she had over the article about her on Wikipedia, and Wales determined the article was not compliant with Wikipedia’s standards. The tech blog Valleywag revealed Wales had a personal relationship with Marsden, and posted supposed transcripts of their instant message conversations on its site, www.valleywag.com. Wales and Marsden met in February, and The Times reported that “An apparent transcript of their conversations before that meeting suggests that, although Mr Wales had withdrawn from the editing process, he was still influencing the editors.” The Times quoted Wales from the chat logs as having stated to Marsden “The truth is of course a much worse conflict of interest than that; but that will do.” — in reference to his conflict of interest regarding Marsden’s article on Wikipedia.

Wales posted a public statement on Saturday on Wikipedia addressing the matter, and stated that his relationship with Marsden was over: “First, while I find it hard to imagine that anyone really cares about my sex life, the facts are: I am separated from my wife. I considered myself single at the time of my one meeting with Rachel Marsden on Feb. 9, 2008 … I am no longer involved with Rachel Marsden. Gossipy stories suggesting that I have been in a relationship with her ‘since last fall’ are completely false … I care deeply about the integrity of Wikipedia, and take very seriously my responsibilities as a member of the board and as a member of the Wikipedia community. I would never knowingly do anything to compromise that trust.” With regard to the conflict of interest in Marsden’s article, Wales had acknowledged to a team of Wikipedia editors in February 2008 that he and Marsden “became friends … and that we would be meeting about that,” and stated “I recused myself from any further official action with respect to her biography.”

On Sunday, The Canadian Press reported that Marsden had posted photos of herself on Ebay, and was selling items that Wales had left at her New York City apartment. In her Ebay posting, Marsden stated: “Hi, my name is Rachel and my (now ex-) boyfriend, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, just broke up with me via an announcement on Wikipedia … It was such a classy move that I was inspired to do something equally classy myself, so I’m selling a couple of items of clothing he left behind, here in my NYC apartment, on eBay. Jimbo was supposed to come visit me in a couple of weeks and pick up some of his stuff, but obviously that won’t be happening now.” Marsden told The Canadian Press “It didn’t really help matters that Jimmy chose to announce the breakup to the entire world via Wikipedia (which apparently now is an online encyclopedia that doubles as a personal soapbox?) rather than to me directly (which he did much later, in an instant message discussion).”

I care deeply about the integrity of Wikipedia, and take very seriously my responsibilities as a member of the board and as a member of the Wikipedia community. I would never knowingly do anything to compromise that trust.

Marsden placed a t-shirt and sweater which she said were left at her apartment by Wales up on Ebay, and started the bidding for each at ninety-nine cents, with the auctions set to end on March 12. By Monday, bidding on the t-shirt had reached US$300, and by Tuesday the highest bid had reached $12,200. In an email to The Globe and Mail, Marsden stated “My only focus right now, to be really honest, is on my career and finding a way to get back into print, TV, or radio here in NYC,” she wrote. “All of this other personal stuff is just an unfortunate distraction.”

Jay Walsh, the Wikimedia Foundation’s head of communications, told the San Jose Mercury News that Wales’ actions in relaying Marsden’s concerns about her Wikipedia article to a team of trusted editors was within his “routine” role. When asked by the San Jose Mercury News if Wales’ actions regarding the Marsden article could compromise his role with the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia, Walsh responded “No, absolutely not.”

On Tuesday, ABC News carried a story by Wired News reporter Megan McCarthy regarding allegations of “excessive spending” by Wales, and Associated Press also reported on questions involving Wikimedia Foundation expenses. McCarthy reported that former Wikimedia executive Danny Wool, who had left the foundation last year, criticized Wales’ use of Wikimedia Foundation expenses in a blog post. Wool stated that Wales had tried to expense $300 bottles of wine, a $1,300 dinner for four at a Florida steakhouse, and visits to Moscow massage parlors to the foundation, and that the foundation rescinded Wales’ corporate credit card in 2006. Wool also stated that Wales paid the foundation $7,000, after being short $30,000 on receipts for expenses.

Wool told EPICENTER that “There were occasions where he used [the Wikimedia Foundation] for personal advancement under the guide [sic] of the mission. And, as someone who was in there for the mission part of it, I found that rather distressful.” Wool commented in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle: “Originally, it was carelessness … But as things developed, it became more apparent and obvious that he was taking advantage of the foundation credit card. It was almost like his personal piggy bank.”

Jimmy has never used Wikimedia money to subsidize his personal expenditures. Indeed, he has consistently put the foundation’s interests ahead of his own.

In an instant message exchange with Associated Press, Wales denied that the Wikimedia Foundation had taken away his corporate credit card, and asserted that he had made the decision to stop expensing business travel for the foundation. Wales highlighted a statement by the foundation’s executive director Sue Gardner: “Jimmy has never used Wikimedia money to subsidize his personal expenditures. Indeed, he has consistently put the foundation’s interests ahead of his own.” In an email to Associated Press, Brad Patrick, a former attorney for the Wikimedia Foundation, stated “Danny seems interested in blogging his way straight to a lawsuit”.

Florence Devouard, who chairs the Wikimedia Foundation, told Associated Press that Wales had been “slow in submitting receipts,” and that the foundation had rejected Wales’ expense at the Florida steakhouse. Devouard told fellow foundation board members in a private email that she had convinced Associated Press that “the money story was a no story,” and told Wales “I find (it) tiring to see how you are constantly trying to rewrite the past. Get a grip!” Wales told Associated Press: “The board, the current executive director, the previous executive director, and independent auditors have reviewed our books and publicly agree that all of my expenses were appropriate and fully accounted for.”

Media reports speculated on how the controversy would end up being represented in Wikipedia itself. On Wednesday, the St. Petersburg Times wrote: “Wales’ Wikipedia page said only this about Marsden: ‘Wales had a brief relationship with Canadian journalist Rachel Marsden.'” An article in The Australian surmised: “History will decide whether Mr Wales broke his own principles, but before that happens there may well be a Wikipedia page devoted to the controversy.”

Playing With Luck With Your Lottery Merchant Account

Submitted by: Bailey Thompson

Feeling lucky today? With a lottery merchant account, the good fortune is a few steps closer to your doorstep.

Venturing into operating a lottery business seem ideally convenient, but when you go to a bank to apply for a merchant account to be able to get lottery bets through credit card payments, a different scenario comes in. Delving into the world of lottery is a good pale to start understanding the reasons why it’s close to anything but perfect.

To begin, lottery is a form of gambling. Each ticket has a unique number or symbol corresponding to a individual lot. These lots are subjected to a draw, either by a person or a machine, if your lot is the one drawn, then you hit the jackpot.

Early sightings

Lottery first surfaced approximately 200 years before Christ was born. Main purpose was to raise funds for constructing dams, houses, temples, and significant landmarks, ultimately the Great Wall of China, which is now part of the prestigious Wonders of the World list.

Leisure was the driving force of lottery existence in Europe during the Roman Empire. During this period, the elite were the only group of people who can participate in this game. What happens in the tea parties is that each arriving guest receives a ticket, with impeccable dinnerware as the prize pot.

Winning money became the main goal for the Dutch. Every participant had an average of four tickets with a probability of only one of those tickets hitting the prize money. The modern-day name of lottery came from their tongue, loterij, which came from lot meaning fate. It is interesting to note that their staatsloterij still exists and is considered as th e oldest existing lottery.

Transfigurations

There are many forms of lotteries. Organizers lure participants into offering prizes which are either money or goods. If all the tickets are not sold, the organizers have to come up with ways to get enough funds to fill the prize money or goods.

Another form is the 50-50 draw wherein the prize will be half of the revenue. This is to ensure that even if all of the tickets were not sold, a prize will still be awarded.

In order to gain more participants to join, a new form emerged. Instead of randomly giving tickets, this involves allowing the participants to choose the numbers that they feel will be drawn. This strategy is the one being adapted today.

High risk, high returns

Most of the lottery operations are run by the government. This is to ensure that the taxes go to the state. In some countries, they have made lottery a legal form of gambling. Casinos are now being established and run by the state.

The thought of winning on a slim chance has an enormous appeal. More often than not, the great anticipation and excitement is what makes lottery tick. Even if you have lots of tickets, the probability of getting drawn is still undetermined.

Since governments have the upper hand in running lotteries, this makes it harder for private operators to get into the zone. One of the levels they’re having a hard time is applying for merchant accounts. Banks already considered lottery as high risk because of its high chargebacks and tax complications, but with the government as the applicant, banks feel a little more secured.

Having a lottery merchant account enables you to accept payments for tickets using via credit cards. Accepting credit card payments is good for business since almost everyone has a credit card. Modern lottery and lottery websites makes the draw using the mark sense technology. Mark sense is an optical reader found within most computer scanners that captures visual information and translates the image into digital information the computer is capable of understanding and displaying. Incorporate mark sense and your merchant account’s payment gateway, you success as a lottery owner and operator is inevitable.

They say success is a combination of luck and your own work. But with a lottery merchant account, it’s not really about the winning, it’s about enjoying the ride.

Seventeen injured after coach overturns near Oxford, England

Monday, December 13, 2010

At least seventeen people were admitted to an Oxford hospital after a coach, operated by the Oxford Tube service, overturned while exiting the M40 motorway near Thame, Saturday evening. There were no other vehicles involved according to Thames Valley Police.

The incident took place at around 2300 GMT Saturday night at junction seven of the M40 near Milton Common, when a coach, belonging to the Oxford Tube service, overturned on a slip road. A police spokesperson stated “The exit slip at junction seven was closed, as well as the A329 in both directions either side of the M40. The coach is in the process of being recovered from the motorway.” The motorway itself remained open.

Sergeant Steve Blackburn of Thames Valley Police stated that “The vast majority [of passengers] were walking wounded or not injured at all and were released either at the scene or shortly after receiving some treatment.”

John Nixon from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue noted that the coach was lying on its side on an embankment, stating that his crews’ priority had been to stabilise the coach. He added, “There were people laid on the side of the embankment, on the road, covered in space-type blankets to keep them warm”

Although there were no fatalities, five of the injured required surgery, which was undertaken at Oxford’s John Radcliffe hospital. Of the other admissions, a number were discharged by Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the Oxford Tube was quoted by the BBC as stating that, “Safety is our absolute priority and our immediate thoughts are with those who have been injured in the accident.” They added, “We will be carrying out our own internal investigation and assisting the police in any way that we can with their inquiries into the accident.”

Police have already begun an investigation into the cause of the accident and have requested witnesses come forward.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Three Mile Cross roads policing unit via Thames Valley Police’s 24-hour Enquiry Centre on 08458 505 505

Oracle to acquire Siebel for USD 5.85bn

Tuesday, September 13, 2005

US-based Oracle Corporation announced earlier today that they are buying rival US-based Siebel Systems for $10.66 USD per share. Siebel shareholders have the option to receive the $10.66 per share in cash or in Oracle stock. This deal is valued at approximately $5.85 billion USD. Siebel Systems’ Board of Directors has already voted in favour of the acquisition. Founder Thomas Siebel has also given his support. A special meeting will soon be held for Siebel stockholders to vote on the acquisition. If all goes well the deal should close in the early part of next year.

After acquiring Siebel; Oracle, which specializes in database applications, will become the second largest software company. Oracle has offices in more than 145 countries, and employs over 50,000 people. This acquisition will make Oracle the largest customer relationship management (CRM) applications company in the world. CRM applications include accounting, inventory management and customer management software. “Siebel’s 4,000 applications customers and 3,400,000 CRM users strengthen our number one position in applications in North America and move us closer to the number one position in applications globally”, said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.

“Today is a great day for Siebel Systems’ customers, partners, shareholders, and employees,” said Thomas M. Siebel, Chairman and Founder of Siebel Systems. Many analysts predicted the acquisition of Siebel after Oracle bought competitor PeopleSoft for $10 billion USD, last December.

Irish CAO releases 2005 university offers to students

Monday, August 22, 2005

The Central Applications Office in Ireland has released the first round of offers for places on third level courses to over 60,000 Irish Leaving Certificate students (graduating secondary school students).

The offers are given out based on a highly competitive points system whereby students receive from

 • 100 points for an A1 to 45 points for a D3 at higher level.
 • 60 points for an A1 to 5 points for a D3 on lower level.

Points from a student’s best six subjects are added up to make his or her total points. This year 145 students achieved the maximum 600 points. Students achieveing this are generally regarded as the top students academically in the country.

Points required for courses in medicine and nursing have risen again leaving many candidates disappointed. Due to the huge popularity of medicine and the low supply of courses, points for entry into medicine are in the region of 580 points. Points for arts, engineering and commerce have fallen marginally.

While the points system is often attacked for placing too much pressure on students, it has avoided the problem of grade inflation that has occurred in the UK and USA. The Leaving Certificate exam has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 1924. It is often joked that the same questions reappear on the papers every 30 or 40 years.

The Advantages And Disadvantage Of Patio Homes}

Submitted by: Rob Harding

Patio homes by definition is rather a generic term in the real estate market. It could be a condo, a garden apartment, or even a townhouse to some. In Denver, Colorado, a patio home has a common wall with another home, and the patio is in the front looking out on a common area. A patio home in Denver is considered a town home, with two or more stories, where a common wall is also shared.

A home is not always a house. The term home itself is confusing when one is seeking a house. A home can be almost anything.

The best part about owning a patio home is that there is no maintenance that will be your responsibility. A gardener is hired to do the gardening and lawn maintenance, and others are hired to keep the place clean and in working condition. Often there is a fee for this, called a homeowners fee. Again, the word home does not refer to a house. This association of homeowners may also have the right to vote on the neighbors that are trying to purchase the other units. If you do not like something about them, you may be able to keep them out.

And some patio homes are in gated communities, where there is twenty four hour security. This protects everyone from burglars, it protects their children from pedophiles, and it protects everyone from the undesirable nosey dog walker or peeping tom. It is a deterrent to all types of crime in your immediate area.

With a common wall, your neighbors could not be closer unless they lived in your unit with you. To some, this is a very desirable setup, especially if family will be moving in next door, and you need to care for them.

The common wall could also be a disadvantage. For quiet and privacy, this could be quite a nightmare of a home. You will hear neighbors talking loudly, as if you live in an apartment building. The same will go for the music heard in the other unit, and the television set, as well.

The privacy you are giving up in order to live in an almost maintenance free space may be worth it for you if you job takes you traveling away from your home for various lengths of time. Or if your position is demanding in a way that you would not have time for any garden maintenance at all, this scenario also works well. In this case, you need not worry about mowing or watering the lawn and flowers, as it will be done for you.

When you are ready to sell your patio home, the pros and cons of living there will all be brought up in discussion. You will need to praise your neighbors for being so cooperative and quiet. You will have to credit the gardener and other maintenance people for keeping everything looking clean and maintained. And you will need to convince the real estate agent you are dealing with that your unit is unique and better than other ones that may be for sale for less. This may be the trickiest part of owning patio homes.
