Tips For Choosing A Good Dentist

Submitted by: Gabriel Adams

When choosing a dentist, you will need to take a number of factors into consideration. If you have dental insurance, however, the first step in the selection process will be to find out which dentists are covered through your insurance.

Many dental insurance policies restrict the choices of dentists that can used in order to gain the full advantages of the coverage. Those dentists that are included in the network have agreed to abide by the guidelines as established by the insurance company, including agreeing to receive only a specific amount of money from the insurance company on various procedures.

Once you know which dentists are available in your network, you can begin to narrow down your choices even further. Of course, if you are unable to find a dentist in your network that you feel comfortable with, most policies will allow you to go to a dentist that outside of your network. The downside to taking this step is the fact that you will have to pay more out of your own pocket toward your visits and treatments. Over time, this can become quite costly.

If you are hoping to stay within your network in order to reap the greatest benefits of your insurance, talk to your co-workers about their experiences with dentists in your network. Reputation goes a long way when it comes to selecting the best dentist for you. If you find that many of your co-workers prefer going to one specific dentist, you will likely enjoy going to that dentist as well. Similarly, if you have co-workers that have had a bad experience with a particular dentist, you know to avoid using the services that dentist offers.

Of course, proximity to your home is another factor. Depending on where you work, many of your co-workers may live in an area that is far from where you live. As such, you should seek out those co-workers that live in your area in order to find out who they go to for their dental hygiene care.

How To Make Sure Dentists In Hawaaii Have Good Professional Hygienic Habits

byadmin

Visiting any of the Dentists Hawaii can be stressful for some people. While most dentists are ethical and operate under strict guidelines, some are not. That is why it’s important to look for certain things when you are at the dental office. Don’t be nervous about asking a dentist or a member of her staff questions that pertain to hygienic practices. It’s your health and up to you to protect it.

If you are seeing a dentist for the first time, you need to be extra vigilant of your surroundings and the actions the dentist and her staff take. It’s important to make sure the office is generally clean and well-organized. This means there are no soiled materials such as towels and instruments on the floor and other places. If the condition of a dental office is a state of disarray, it might be a sign that the dentist herself does not take cleanliness seriously.

When you are getting your dental treatments, make sure the dentist only uses dental instruments that come out of a sealed package. Being in a sealed package means instruments have been properly sterilized in a device called an autoclave. You can ask for a certificate of authenticity that validates that as certain autoclave is functioning properly. Reputable Dentists Hawaii will be happy to provide you with this requested information.

It’s a good idea to watch the dentist right before she puts on gloves. Does she wash her hands before she puts them on? Se should. Also, the gloves should only come out of an appropriate container that keeps them sterilized. A dentist should not touch anything with the gloves she is wearing but your mouth and the dental instruments she uses to treat you with. You can ask her if she changes gloves in between patients. Again, don’t be hesitant to do this. Any dentist worth seeing will answer your questions without giving you a hard time.

Going to a dentist means taking small actions to make sure your health is not compromised. After you are familiar with a dentist, you can relax more and not be so cautious about her hygienic practices. However, you should always keep certain things in mind so you will at least be aware of them.

Depakote Allegedly Responsible For Causing Ovarian Cysts In Women

Although past studies regarding the anticonvulsant medication, Depakote, have focused on the potential for the drug to cause major birth defects in infants who are exposed to Depakote in utero, recent research has indicated that Depakote may also contribute to an increased risk of ovarian cysts in women who take the drug to treat their seizure-related disorders. In fact, according to a recent study, 10.5% of women who took Abbott Laboratories’ Depakote developed irregularities in their menstrual cycles accompanied by hyperandrogenism, a risk factor for ovarian cysts. This significant risk represents a percentage 7.5 times higher than that of other anti-seizure medications, like Lithium.

Depakote use has been associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition caused by a hormone imbalance in the brain and ovaries, affecting approximately five to ten percent of women of child-bearing age. Changes to the ovaries typical of PCOS cause multiple follicles to accumulate in the ovaries without being ovulated. The ovaries then secrete increased levels of estrogen and testosterone, causing women with PCOS to experience irregular or absent menstruation, hypertension, diabetes, excess body hair and obesity. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is also believed to be one of the leading causes of infertility in females.

The ovaries of women with PCOS receive irregular signals from the pituitary gland, which prevents them from ovulating, or producing eggs. Lack of ovulation causes infertility and can also lead to other severe medical conditions such as endometrial cancer and a disorder called endometrial hyperplasia. Many women with PCOS are prescribed a form of birth control pill since these products contain the hormones a woman’s body requires to treat the condition. By taking these hormone-containing contraceptives, women with PCOS can correct their hormone imbalance, regulate their menstrual cycle, lower the level of testosterone in their bodies, and decrease their risk of developing endometrial cancer.

According to extensive research, PCOS has a higher prevalence in women with bipolar disorder, which may be caused directly or indirectly by the use of valproate-containing anticonvulsant medications like Depakote. Regardless of the specific role Depakote may play in the potential development of polycystic ovarian syndrome, experts believe that anti-epileptic medications like Depakote may significantly compound the risk of women developing PCOS, potentially causing infertility and other major medical issues.

Malaria Prevention Five Ways To Avoid Catching It On Safari

By Bruce Whittaker

Malaria is endemic to most of the areas in Africa where safari trips are still possible which means you will need to take malaria prevention precautions to protect yourself against catching the disease when you travel there.

There are five things you can do to avoid catching malaria on a safari holiday.

1. Malaria Tablets

It’s important to consult your GP when deciding on the brand of malaria tablets for your trip because they affect everyone differently and your medical history might play a role in the choice.

There are three types of tablets that are still considered to provide adequate malaria prevention (up to 98%) even though there is no drug that is 100% effective and some of them may have mild side effects – Malarone, Larium and Doxycycline.

Paludrine and Chloroquine are less than 60% effective because the disease has built up a resistance to these drugs over the years.

2. Safari Clothing

Mosquito’s become much more active at dusk and during the night and early morning so you need to make sure that you cover up any exposed skin with the right clothing when you are outside.

It is often still very warm during the evenings but resist the temptation to stay in t-shirt and short trousers and rather cover up with long trousers, a long sleeve shirt and socks to protect your ankles against bites. They can’t bite you through material.

Remember that malaria prevention is much better than cure.

3. Mosquito repellent

make sure that you apply mosquito repellent to any areas that your clothing doesn’t cover particularly your hands and your neck.

Repellents that contain DEET are very good for keeping the mosquito’s away but remember to re-apply periodically because the effect diminishes over time.

4. Mosquito Nets

Most safari companies do have mosquito nets installed in the accommodation they provide for their guests so make sure you check with them first if you are planning on buying one for your trip.

But not all accommodation in Africa has them and if you are going to be spending time before or after your safari it might be a good idea to have one handy.

Make sure that you purchase Permethrin treated nets as that stop the mosquitoes from biting through the material, protects against damaged or poorly erected netting and decreases the amount of insects in the room.

5. Malaria Free Safaris

The most effective way to avoid catching malaria is of course to stay away from the areas in which it occurs and there are some safari areas in South Africa which are malaria free and still provide an authentic safari experience with the big five animals available for viewing.

Madikwe, Shamwari, Pilansberg and Addo Elephant Park are examples of some fantastic game reserves that are completely malaria free making all the other malaria prevention measures unnecessary.
