2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Airborne sedan smashes into dental office in Santa Ana, California, US

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

A car accident involving the car occupants and a dentist’s office happened on Sunday night in Santa Ana, California. A white Nissan sedan which was apparently driving too fast hit the raised concrete median on the road, after which it was launched into the air, slamming straight into the wall of the second floor of a two-story dental practice building, where the car got wedged.

According to the police, the car approached from a side street. The room of the dental office penetrated by the sedan was used as a storage space. A fire department crane was used to extract the vehicle from the building, which took several hours.

There were two people in the sedan. One of them managed to escape from the hanging vehicle on his own, while the other one remained trapped inside it for over an hour. They were both hospitalized with minor injuries, according to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). According to the police, the driver of the car admitted narcotics use, and after toxicology tests the case is to be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The moment of the accident was captured by surveillance video from a bus which the car narrowly missed when becoming airborne.

According to OCFA spokesperson Captain Stephen Horner, there was a small fire after the crash, which was extinguished quickly.

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Local caterers get ready for big business, as almost three thousand fans converge on the David L. Lawrence Convention Center over the Independence Day weekend for the world’s largest ever furry convention, Anthrocon 2007.

Many hope to renew acquaintances, or meet new friends. Others look to buy from dealers and artists, or show off new artwork or costumes. Some attend to make money, or even learn a thing or two. But one thing unites them: They’re all there to have fun.

Alfresco Infrared Gas Bbq Grills And Replacement Grill Parts

By Jason Broderick

Infrared grills get their energy from natural gas or propane. This energy superheats a tile made of ceramic, causing the ceramic tile to give off infrared radiation that cooks food. The main benefit from using an infrared gas grill is that the heat is distributed uniformly throughout the cooking surface. The temperature reaches more than 900 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows the items to be seared quickly. With other types of grilling, hot air cooks the food. But instead of heating the air, the infrared radiation penetrates the food, heating it directly. Infrared grills have shorter pre-heating times, and the food gets less dried out than with other types of grills. Many people say that the food cooked on an infrared grill tastes somewhat like charcoal grilled food, but that it is juicier. Other great things about infrared grills include instantaneous ignition, uniform heating of the ceramic tile, and superior heat control.

Alfresco infrared gas grills have been around since 2000, when the company was founded to bring the great features of a professional kitchen to an outdoor setting. Alfresco’s grills lead the industry with 27,500 BTUs of power. They’re made form high-heat stainless steel, and the burners have a lifetime warranty. Alfresco’s hybrid infrared system brings the searing power of a commercial grade infrared broiler to the backyard. And they happen to look great, too, with hand-polished accents. Alfresco infrared grills were designed to be an integral part of a complete outdoor kitchen that’s designed for the best efficiency, great ergonomics, and a well-thought-out approach to food preparation. Alfresco allows outdoor chefs to have a top-end outdoor kitchen fit for a professional chef.

Alfresco’s open air kitchen refrigerators are all built with commercial stainless steel construction and doors with gaskets to seal out the outside environment. They’re made to fit underneath Alfresco grills and other outdoor Alfresco open air kitchen appliances. These refrigerators are designed to perform even in very high or very low temperatures. With adjustable wire shelves and a high velocity evaporator, Alfresco’s refrigerators bring true commercial quality to the open air kitchen. You can also buy an optional keg kit that turns an Alfresco outdoor under-counter refrigerator into a keggerator. Even if the outside temperature reaches 120 degrees, the inside of an Alfresco under-counter refrigerator remains a cool 37 degrees Fahrenheit. These refrigerators may be expensive, but that’s because they have to be designed and built to withstand the extremes that outdoor cooking can bring. They’re a great complement to an Alfresco infrared gas grill, because they can be installed right underneath or beside the grill for maximum convenience and efficiency when cooking outdoors.

The latest line of Alfresco infrared gas grills is the LX2. It comes in 30, 42, and 56 inch sizes, and offers the most advanced features of any gas grill on the market, even among commercial grills. It has professional features like flip-down control panels, integrated rotisseries, and the trademarked Neverstore Warming Rack, which is a specially engineered warming rack that has four adjustable height positions. It even has an “up” position that allows the use of the rotisserie without having to remove the rack. These are designed not only to impress the neighbors, but to impress even the world’s leading chefs.

Alfresco infrared gas grills are considered the best because they are made to high commercial quality standards, and no corners are cut for the home market. These grills are designed to be an integral part of an open air kitchen, so that cooking out doesn’t depend on the indoor kitchen for storage, warming, or refrigeration. Any outdoor kitchen has to be able to stand up to extreme weather conditions, and Alfresco products are specially designed to take whatever the outdoor environment dishes out, from extreme low to extreme high temperatures. From multi-use cookers to special “prep zones” to commercial quality refrigeration and grilling, Alfresco is designed to make the outdoor kitchen every bit as well-equipped as the best indoor kitchen.

Alfresco’s LX2 series features 27,500 BTU main burners, porcelain ceramic briquettes that are shaped to evenly distribute heat. The chain-driven rotisserie has a hidden built-in motor and roller bearings so that no counterweight is needed. The flush-mounted ceramic infrared burner provides direct high heat to lock in flavor and juices. An integrated smoker accommodates wood chunks for cold smoking, and the smoke ejector is designed to distribute smoke before rising so that food takes on an intense smoked flavor. The LX2 grills feature integrated high intensity halogen work lights, and as an option on the smaller models (and standard on the 56″ model) is the Sear Zone ceramic searing system. It preheats to 1,400 degrees in under 5 minutes and flash-caramelizes food.

Alfresco’s AGBQ series has a flush-mounted infrared rotisserie with an oversized spit rod and motor capable of turning more than 100 lbs. The Sear Zone as in the LX2 line is optional on smaller models and standard on the 56″ model. The main burners are made from high temperature stainless steel, resisting heat up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. They carry a lifetime warranty. They also come with electropolished solid stainless steel racks, and pyramid-style ceramic briquettes for even heat distribution. There is a removable drip tray for easy clean-up, and a convenient 9-volt ignition for easy starting. You can get the AGBQ line in built-in and cart models, and you have the option of integrated refrigeration.

Alfresco infrared gas grills, like Alfresco’s outdoor refrigeration and other outdoor kitchen appliances are commercial quality for the home. They aren’t just good “for a home grill,” they’re good period, appealing even to the world’s top chefs. Infrared grilling gives food a juicy, great taste and even heating. The grills heat up super fast, deliver the best quality food, and have numerous features that make the chef’s job more convenient with more options than ever. An Alfresco infrared gas grill is the heart of a great outdoor kitchen.

Czech pub food eating experiment resulted in lost weight, lower cholesterol

Friday, March 10, 2006

On February 8, the same day Super Size Me opened in Prague, a Czech film company’s volunteer known as Karel Gustav Bozan began a 1 month diet of Czech pub food and beer in a Czech version called “Super Spek Me”; which translates loosely as “Super Flab Me”.

Zuzana Pudilova of Aerofilms described the volunteer at that time: “He is a well-built man between 45 and 50. He is almost 2 metres tall, he is not exactly thin but until now he has had quite a healthy lifestyle.”

Karel ate typical Czech pub food for an entire month with three rules: no vegetables or fresh fruit (unless they came with a meal) no exercise, and lots of beer.

Karel’s menu consisted entirely of typical Czech dishes. Obesity therapist, Iva Malkova, had warned at the beginning of the project: “People in the Czech Republic eat much more fat, especially animal fat than is recommended.” Pub meals in the Czech Republic often consist of such fatty items as goose with dumplings or sausages.

Yesterday the results were announced; Karel lost six kilos, his cholesterol went down and so did his liver enzymes, triglyceride and uric acid levels. His blood pressure did not change. At his interview with Radio Prague he said: “I feel good, great! The food was varied and there were even enough greens in the garnish. As for beer, I tried to alternate brands but I always settled it with Pilsner. I liked the experiment, it was all paid for by the distributor, Aerofilms. I would do it again, maybe they will propose it to me!”

Zuzana Pudilova of Aerofilms said: “The result of the experiment is surprising – both for us and the experts who monitored it. The medical report says our volunteer has lost weight and his blood sugar has dropped. So we have come to the conclusion that fatty Czech pub grub is not all that bad for you – which I guess wasn’t meant to be the result of the experiment at all.”

130 OECD countries back global corporate tax rate

Thursday, July 1, 2021

130 countries and jurisdictions in the 139-member Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) agreed to support an overhaul to the international taxation system that would introduce a global minimum corporate tax rate Thursday, committing most of the world’s economies to a two-pillar “solution”.

The states which agreed to the plan’s key components included regional divisions such as Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Montserrat, tax havens according to the Associated Press (AP) Bermuda and the Cayman Islands and all Group of Twenty (G20) countries, according to an OECD list, but not Barbados, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Peru also abstained, but due to its lack of government, according to The Guardian.

Those that have signed represent over 90% of global gross domestic product (GDP). A press release by the OECD calls the framework the result of “negotiations coordinated by the OECD for much of the last decade” and criticises the “century-old international tax system” for being “no longer fit for purpose”. The plan was backed by United States president Joe Biden according to multiple sources, and comes after a similar Group of Seven deal on international taxation agreed June 5.

The plan, officially the “OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting”, adopts a pillared approach. An implementation plan will be finalised by October.

The first will force multinational enterprises (MNEs) with global turnover exceeding EUR20 billion and profitability above 10% to reallocate tax on over USD100 billion in profit from their home markets to each market jurisdiction it derived at least one million or 250 thousand euros from, depending on its GDP. An OECD statement confirmed the threshold for affected MNEs under pillar one may change to those exceeding ten billion euros in turnover, dependent on the results of a review to be conducted in seven years’ time.

The second pillar consists of two “Global anti-Base Erosion Rules” allocating top-up tax of a minimum of 15%, and one treaty-based “Subject to Tax Rule” to be made effective in 2023.

The effects of both pillars, though dependent on the final framework, is estimated by the OECD to increase global corporate tax (CIT) reserves between 1.9 and 3.2 per cent, or 50 and 80 billion USD. Taking into account the effect of both pillars and the existing US tax on global intangible low-taxed income introduced in 2017 under president Donald Trump, the growth of CIT reserves would be between 2.3 and 4 per cent, or 56 and 102 billion USD. This would also protect against tax avoidance practices which the OECD says costs countries between 100 and 240 billion USD in lost revenue per year, according to the AP.

However, the OECD also projects a “relatively small” negative effect on investment and activity equivalent to 0.1% of GDP in the medium- to long-term. Other concerns cited include the potential governments may lose the ability to use tax incentives for policy objectives and the cost of ensuring compliance.

Countries opposed include Hungary and Ireland who have, according to Politico, sought lower rates to attract foreign direct investment and have, in addition to Estonia according to the BBC, at least some corporate rates below the proposed floor of 15%. Ireland stands to lose over two billion euros in the next four years according to Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ).

The Irish and Hungarian headline corporate rates stand at 12.5 and 9 per cent, respectively, according to The Guardian.

OECD secretary general Mathias Cormann said in the press release “this historic package will ensure that large multinational companies pay their fair share of tax everywhere”, adding while it “does not eliminate tax competition […] it does set multilaterally agreed limitations”.

Biden said the deal means the world is in “striking distance of full global agreement to halt the race to the bottom”, which US treasury secretary Janet Yellen described as a race “no nation” has won, according to The Guardian. Finance minister for France Bruno Le Maire called it the “most important international tax agreement in a century”, according to the BBC.

According to RTÉ, finance minister for Ireland Paschal Donohoe said while he “expressed Ireland’s reservation”, he remains “committed to the process” and assures the global community “Ireland will continue to play our part in reaching a comprehensive and, indeed, historic agreement”. According to Reuters, on June 9, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán called the proposal “absurd”, and insisted the country’s low rates “is not meant to attract certain companies to declare their taxes here”, nor makes it “a tax haven”.

Venice, Italy is to host G20 finance ministers and central bank governors at a “G20 High-Level Tax Symposium” on July 9, according to the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance.

What Happens When You Experience Overwhelming Self Doubt?

By Gregory Frost

This is a position that nobody wants to be in. This is the hell for proponents of character and self improvement. This is where we do not want to be – and once we surrender to this, there is almost no where to turn again. It is a dark place, treacherous and full of quicksand patches of depression, anger and irrational fear that can sink us further into this hole in our life. What happens when you experience overwhelming self-doubt?

You feel that you are no longer yourself. You look in the mirror and can barely recognise the man or woman that stares back at you, haggard, shoddy. These hands are not yours that raise to shield away the reflection you see before you. The voice is not yours that brands yourself a failure and the floor has overtaken your vision as you look down – realising the disaster that gazes back at you with even a hint of sarcasm, fear and loathing. You have lost all control. You cannot do anything and are stuck in a negative cycle that overtakes you – wave after wave that crashes into your once solid foundation and now has whittled it away to nary more than a beach of eroding sand – a mere shadow of what you used to be.

This leads to depression and depression is the strange bedfellow of self-doubt. It can create anxiety attacks and place a drab colour over the world you once saw as bright and full of promise. You shy away from your friends and even your family because you have irrational hate or fear – the very emotions that will cause you to be alone. And alone, you wallow in your self pity, you chew upon your suffering until your stomach is full of it and you can take no more. Depression drives you to a mania. You quit your job and you linger in the fringes of the world, seemingly looking in from a place that is exclusively and tormentingly yours. And you spy the rope, the blade and the pill as solace – the final solution.

This is a dark picture and a possible but far destination for us who are sometimes visited by that monster called self doubt. It may just whisper to us now but soon the voice will get louder and louder and we might have no choice but to listen to it.

Don’t let it come to that stage. We need to reprogram our mind and remove the monster from the recesses of our subconscious because ladies and gentlemen – this is where it lives. It has been nursed by the negative experiences and the bad influences of the world, advertising and examples we see and hear everyday. It is led by the failures in our lives – failures we allow to take over and breathe more life into this monster. The solution is out there – technology or even traditional methods that allow you to reach in and remove this monster and take back your life. Psychological and subliminal – it’s time for an alternative solution.
