Mascots for Vancouver 2010 Olympics based on native mythology

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

The mascots of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia were just announced. Based on mythological characters, they are Miga, Quatchi and Sumi.

Miga, a sea bear who lives in the ocean with her family pod near Tofino, and Quatchi, a young sasquatch, represent the Olympics, while Sumi represents the Paralympics that follow afterward.

A sea bear is a First Nations creature, part killer whale, part Kermode spirit bear. While illustrated as being taller than the other characters, the mascot costume of Quatchi is the same height as the other two characters.

The third mascot, Sumi, an animal-guardian spirit, is a Thunderbird that wears the hat of an orca. Sumi will be the mascot of the Paralympics.

In 2004, the Times Colonist suggested a marmot might be a good mascot, except for their winter hibernation. The organizers still chose one, named Mukmuk, as their “virtual only” counterpart.

After the Olympic logo design was leaked the day before the 2005 announcement, organizers were extremely tight lipped until today’s news conference at a Surrey school. They apparently didn’t do any development on the characters on internet-enabled computers, to ensure the images or information wouldn’t slip out.

The characters were designed by the Vancouver and Los Angeles-based Meomi Design. Their characters have been used as part of iGoogle, a customizable homepage option from Google, as well as Electronic Arts, Girls Inc., Time Out Magazine, Cyworld, Nick Jr., Bang-on Clothing, and CBC4Kids.

The Vancouver organizers have a CDN$46-million merchandising program; previous Olympics have made as much as $100 million from mascot-related products.

René Fasel, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coordination Commission commented that “The IOC welcomes these imaginative new additions to the Olympic Family as they take their place on the world stage today – a symbol of the Games and of Canada. We know that when Olympians, Paralympians and visitors from around the globe arrive in British Columbia at Games time, they will fall under the spell of these captivating characters.”

The characters first appearance will be at a Bay store in the Lower Mainland; HBC is a major sponsor of the Games. They will then make their way to schools, take a break through the Christmas season, and fly to Ottawa for the Winterlude festival.

Payroll Management 101 The Basics

Payroll and accounting may be the last things you want to think about when running a business. Despite the potentially difficult tasks of managing employee wages, there are some things to know before you start. Most important is your staff. You can’t have a business without them, and they won’t work unless you compensate them in some way…and most people aren’t accepting candy cigarettes and bubble gum anymore. You may feel extremely overwhelmed at the idea of running this part of your business, but the following will help lead you in the right direction. Each company must determine how often its staff will be compensated. This schedule can help ease the flow and management of company money. In addition to pay periods, the company management, whether department managers or a group of company heads, will come up with a compensation scale that will correspond with each employee’s tasks and experience levels along with other factors. There are a number of deductions and taxes to consider for each employee – including federal and state taxes as well as personal deductions specific to each employee. How much is deducted for each employee is determined by wage rate. Whether an employee is salary, hourly, part-time, temporary, freelance, or contract can also affect deduction amounts. Federal and state taxes, social security, Medicare, health insurance, 401k, and other retirement plans should all be taken into consideration when calculating the amount each employee takes home at the end of the compensation period. In order to avoid fines, extra taxes, fees, or even audits, employee compensation must be as accurately calculated as possible. As if figuring out how much to pay and deduct for each employee weren’t enough, you also have deadlines to worry about. Taxes and fees – amounts and deadlines are determined by company size and type – are due at different times throughout the year; a company’s fiscal year can also change these due dates. Inaccurate or late payments can lead to fines and penalties that can easily put a company into the red. This brings up the cash your company has available to use for compensation. Your management department is responsible for keeping a log of cash in versus cash out and making sure that there is enough money to compensate employees. This is important, because, as discussed above, most employees won’t work for nothing.Your payroll department is responsible for getting the compensation to the employees. Setting up direct deposit and printing and sending out paper checks is up to the management of the company. Another part of this department is sending out tax forms each year. These forms, which can include W-2s and certain 1099s, must be printed and postmarked no later than January 31 of each year. The options for managing payroll may seem as daunting as the payroll process itself. Some small companies may find that someone in-house can easily manage a few employees. However, when you increase your staff, you increase the work involved in properly compensating employees as well as meeting various tax deadlines for the company itself. Some software can help with this task, or you may choose to outsource your bookkeeping and payroll to another company just for ease and peace of mind; this option tends to work better if the company is larger or has a non-standard compensation process.Thoroughly examining your options will help you feel more confident that you are making the right decision for your company financially and for the sake of your employees

2010 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure becomes world’s largest Komen race

Saturday, June 12, 2010

The 2010 Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure, held earlier today in St. Louis, Missouri, became the world’s largest Race for the Cure, with over 71,000 participants.

2010 marks the twelfth year for the race in St. Louis, which raises money for breast cancer research nationwide. Originally brought to the city in 1999, it has raised over US$19 million. It was sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors, a locally-headquartered brokerage firm of the financial services provider Wells Fargo. Nationally, the Race for the Cure is hosted by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a non-profit organization supporting breast cancer research.

In 1999, there were only about 10,000 participants in the St. Louis Race for the Cure. In recent years, the number has grown to over 60,000, and today’s 5K race saw over 71,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers. Despite the heat and humidity, 1,090 teams signed up, and over 4,500 breast cancer survivors participated. Overall, the race raised more than US$3.3 million. A phone bank set up by Wells Fargo and local television station KSDK contributed over US$28,000 of that amount in four hours.

Prior to the race, there was a parade of all the breast cancer survivors who had signed up for the race. The actual competition began at 8:30 a.m. CDT (1330 UTC) with the wheelchair race. Following them were the timed runners, the untimed runners, the walkers, and lastly, the “fun walk” participants, who had only opted to walk one mile (1.6 kilometres).

The Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure is only one of many Races for the Cure, which is the largest group of 5K runs and walks in the world. The first Komen race was held in 1983 in Dallas, Texas, but has since spread to over 140 cities throughout the world. Proceeds from today’s St. Louis race will benefit both local institutions and the rest of the United States. At least 25 percent of the money raised will go toward funding national research on breast cancer, while the rest will be given to organizations in St. Louis for breast cancer awareness programs.

English court jails policeman over insurance fraud

Thursday, July 1, 2010

A court in England, UK has jailed a policeman for ten months after he was convicted of defrauding his car insurance company.

Police Constable Simon Hood, 43, arranged for a friend who dealt in scrap metal to dispose of his Audi TT, then claimed it had been stolen.

Hood had been disappointed with the car’s value when he tried to sell it two years after its purchase in 2008. He arranged for friend Peter Marsh, 41, to drive the vehicle to his scrapyard in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Marsh then dismantled the vehicle with the intent of disposing of it, but parts were later found wrapped in bubblewrap at Ace Tyre and Exhaust Centre.

Marsh picked up the TT from outside nearby Gorleston police station. Records show mobile phone conversations between the conspirators that day in March, both before and after the vehicle was reported stolen. The pair denied wrongdoing but were convicted of conspiring to commit insurance fraud after trial.

The fraud was uncovered after Hood told former girlfriend Suzanne Coates of the scheme. It was alleged before Norwich Crown Court that he had confessed to her in an effort to resume their relationship. Coates said that after the pseudotheft, Hood told her “he didn’t want to look for it. He said it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, which I thought was a bit strange.”

You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison

Shortly afterwards Hood suggested they should become a couple once more, she said; she challenged his version of events regarding the car: “He said he did it but I couldn’t tell anyone. He said he did it with Peter. Peter had a key and took the car away and it was going to be taken to bits and got rid of so it was never found.”

Hood was defended by Michael Clare and Marsh by Richard Potts. Both lawyers told the court that their clients had already suffered as a result of the action in mitigation before sentencing. Clare said Hood had resigned from the police after fifteen years of otherwise good service and risked losing his pension. “It is not a case where his position as a police officer was used in order to facilitate the fraud,” he pointed out. “His career is in ruins.” Hood is now pursuing a career in plumbing.

Potts defended Marsh by saying that he, too, had already suffered from his actions. His own insurers are refusing to renew their contract with him when it expires and his bank withdrew its overdraft facility. His business employs 21 people and Potts cited Marsh’s sponsorship of Great Yarmouth In Bloom as amongst evidence he supported his local community.

Judge Alasdair Darroch told Marsh that he did accept the man was attempting to help his friend. He sentenced Marsh to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service. He was more critical of Hood:

“As a police officer you know the highest possible standards are demanded by the public. You have let down the force. You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison.”

5 Foods That Naturally Whiten Your Teeth}

Submitted by: Samuel Kwon

Professional teeth whitening kits are effective, but they come with two major drawbacks: they make teeth extremely sensitive and cost a great amount of money. Instead of constantly spending money on these DIY teeth whitening kits, why not follow a routine that whiten the teeth in a natural way. If you have been thinking if any food can naturally whiten your teeth, you would be surprised to know that there are foods which can help you have a great smile without breaking your budget.

Here are 5 Foods That Will Naturally Whiten Your Teeth:

1. Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the most effective ingredients for teeth whitening. They contain malic acid, which removes stains and Vitamin C, which breaks down plaque that is responsible for that yellowish teeth color, as well as for cavities. In order to benefit from the positive effects of strawberries, mash them and apply them on teeth. Leave them for a couple of minutes, then rinse with water at room temperature. For an enhanced effect, add a pinch of table salt. The salt is abrasive and acts as a gentle scrub. Thus, you whiten and clean the teeth at the same time.

2. Baking soda

Baking soda is one of the most popular ingredients for teeth whitening. Used as such or in combination with other teeth whitening foods (strawberries, lemon juice, coconut oil, etc.), baking soda offers great results. Apply it on teeth for one (if mixed with lemon juice) to 3 minutes (if mixed with water), then rinse it off gently. In order to obtain significant effects, the procedure must be repeated every few days.

3. Coconut oil

Coconut oil makes a surprising appearance on the list of teeth whitening foods. Yet, its whitening properties, as well as its anti-microbial ones, make it a highly effective solution to brighten your teeth on a budget. Even the whitening method is unusual. To brighten your teeth using coconut oil, take a tablespoon of solidified oil and put it in your mouth. When it melts, pull it through the teeth for at least 3 minutes. Then rinse with water and wash your teeth as usual.

4. Lemon or orange juice

Whether you eat one or two oranges once in a while or you use lemon juice in combination with baking soda, the citric juice will help you enhance the appearance of your teeth. The Vitamin C in lemon and orange juice removes teeth stains and leaves an even color. However, do not overuse the citric fruits for teeth whitening, as they are acidic and may affect the tooth enamel.

5. Apple cider vinega

Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient which can make your teeth pearly white. Take a gulp and pull it through your teeth. Before spitting it into the sink, try and brush the teeth for some seconds. Then brush your teeth the way you always do. In order to protect the teeth enamel, choose a non-fluoride tooth paste. To make the most of this treatment, follow the routine for at least one month.

The teeth whitening with food is a slow process compared to professional teeth whitening. Yet, it is much cheaper and, if you make a routine out of it, it gives great results on the long run. Just give one of these foods a try and see for yourself! If you are looking for quick results, Dr Samuel Kwon of SK Family Dental in Puyallup, WA recommends booking an appointment with your dentist.

Russian submarine rescued by Royal Navy

Sunday, August 7, 2005

A Russian submarine trapped during a training exercise in Berezov Bay, 75 km south of Petropavlovsk in Kamchatka, has been rescued after it was cut free by a Royal Navy Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The crew of seven officers and midshipmen, who spent three days in temperatures around 6oC and were running out of oxygen supplies, were unharmed.

The submarine appeared on the surface at 4:15 p.m. local time. “The crew opened the hatch and climbed the rescue ship’s deck on their own,” said Admiral Victor Fyedorov. The first aid to the crew was given on ship Alagez, and they were transferred to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka hospital.

The British Scorpio ROV cut fishing nets and debris, freeing the trapped submarine. “The rescue operation was completed successfully. We thank everyone, and especially the British rescue crew,” said Fyedorov.

The submarine will be repaired and modernized. “After salvaging it, AS-28 will be carried on one of the rescue ship’s decks to the coast, where specialists will examine it,” said a spokesperson of VMS (“Company for secondary metal and boats”). Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged an inquiry into the incident.

The United States and Japan also sent equipment to help in the rescue. However, it was not used.

Memorial service held for model found dead in Missouri mansion

Friday, December 31, 2010

A memorial service was held Thursday for Adrienne Nicole Martin, the model found dead two weeks ago in the Missouri, US mansion of former Anheuser-Busch CEO August Busch IV. Martin, of Native American ethnicity, was 27 years old when she died of unknown causes, said investigators.

Martin, who had been dating the 46-year-old Busch for “the last several months” according to friends, was a native of Springfield. She had previously been married to 45-year-old doctor Kevin J. Martin until February 2009, when they divorced, and had joint custody of their eight-year-old son. Adrienne Martin had a profile on iStudio, a modeling website, where she said she wanted to become an art therapist. She also expressed a desire to “to do beer advertising” and work in the modeling industry. At the time of her death, Martin had been working toward a master’s degree in art therapy.

The memorial service for Martin was held at South Haven Baptist Church in Springfield. Busch was not among the estimated 100 people attending the service, nor was he mentioned during it. The only speaker was the church’s pastor, Scott Watson, who read letters from Martin’s friends. Her son and other relatives sat in the front row while she was remembered as a gifted artist and dedicated mother. Lacy Elet, one of Martin’s friends, later said Martin was happy that “her life was finally in order.” Her obituary in the Springfield News-Leader called Busch “the love of her life.” However, one of Martin’s uncles, Andy Eby, said after the service, “There are too many questions and not enough answers.”

Martin was found unconscious by Michael Jung, who worked at Busch’s mansion, at 12:30 p.m. local time (18:30 UTC) on December 19. At 1:12 p.m., Jung called emergency services, saying, “This girl’s just not waking up.” When asked if she was breathing, Jung responded with, “We don’t know. It’s dark back there. I’m gonna get a light and try and see.” At 1:26 p.m., Martin was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency workers. Law enforcement officials said the room was dark because there were blackout “curtains drawn in the bedroom.”

An autopsy on Martin’s body did not find any trauma-related injuries, and the official cause of death has not been established by investigators. A toxicology report, expected to take several weeks, will likely be used to determine the reason Martin died. Police said Martin’s body did not exhibit any “apparent signs of trauma or other indications of cause of death.” According to her ex-husband, Adrienne Martin had a rare heart condition, called Long QT syndrome, which can cause palpitations and sudden cardiac death. Kevin Martin said his ex-wife never sought medical advice on her condition and did not talk about it with friends.

Police said that Busch was home at the US$2 million mansion when Martin was discovered, and that the ongoing investigation is being handled by the Frontenac Police Department and the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Art Margulis, a lawyer for August Busch IV, said Martin was visiting the Huntleigh residence and that there is “absolutely nothing suspicious” surrounding her death.

NFL: Brett Favre traded to the New York Jets

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Quarterback Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth-round draft selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. The trade was later confirmed by ESPN and the Jets themselves. The multiple National Football League record-holder was the starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers from 1992 to the end of the 2007 NFL season. Favre, 38, announced his retirement on March 6, 2008 after much speculation over his future.

After a long dispute with the Packers’ management, Favre was reinstated by the NFL and was pursued in trade discussions with the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Jets were much more aggressive than the Buccaneers in their pursuit of Favre all along, offering a conditional fourth-round draft choice in the 2009 NFL Draft which could be promoted to a first-round selection based on performance criteria.

“Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished,” the Packers said in a press release. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said of the trade, “We just felt like this was an opportunity to go get somebody of Brett’s stature and what he’s accomplished.”

The trade caps a roller-coaster off-season ride for Favre and the franchise that became synonymous with his legendary No. 4 jersey, which was planned to be retired in the Packers’ home opening game. Favre’s on-again, off-again retirement has monopolized headlines for the past two months as news began trickling to the media that the legendary passer was second-guessing both his retirement decision and his status in Green Bay. Favre was offered a $20 million dollar marketing contract from the Packers to remain retired.

Now, the Jets may have to clear cap space in order to have Favre on their roster — who is due to make $12 million this season — which may call for the release of Chad Pennington. A comment from Jets GM Tannenbaum all but confirmed the release of Pennington. “It’s a bittersweet moment for us. I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person, as a player,” Tannenbaum said, adding that an announcement on a transaction involving Pennington will come later Thursday.

The Packer’s official website states that they will be holding press conferences at noon and 2:00 p.m. CDT and more information will be released then.

How To Fix Common Hair Problems}

How to Fix Common Hair Problems

by

Brent McNutt

Hair problems can be a drag and ruin an otherwise great day. We all encounter hair problems at one point or another, luckily there are a number of ways we can eliminate or prevent these common hair nuisance. Below are some tips for fixing common hair problems.

Dandruff

Dandruff can be very annoying not to mention embarrassing. Dandruff is flakes of dead skin that disperses and falls off from the hair, making it noticeable or visible in a persons hair or on clothing. While the cause of dandruff is unknown, recent studies have suggested that it is caused by a type of fungus. While dandruff is not dangerous or contagious, it can be itchy and uncomfortable. To reduce dandruff flakes, you can use shampoos that are specially formulated to get rid of dandruff. Most of these shampoos contain zinc, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide or tars. When shampooing your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo, massage your scalp gently for at least five minutes. Loosen the flakes with your fingers, but make sure to never scratch your scalp with your nails. Rinse your hair thoroughly after washing. If there is no over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo that works for you, you should see a doctor or hair specialist in urbane scrubs so that he or she can prescribe a liquid or lotion for your scalp.

Hair breakage

Hair strands can break when points in the hair weaken or thicken. Breakage can happen at any point of the hair, at the middle, near the scalp, or at the ends of the air. When hair breaks at the end, it is called split ends; the hair splits and can travel up to the shaft of the hair. Hair breakage is typically caused by the improper use of chemical hair treatments and the use of shampoos that contain strong chemicals. Using organic shampoo with organic and gentle ingredients can lessen hair breakage. Other major causes of breakage also include combing the hair too frequently or brushing and detangling the hair improperly. Using a wide-tooth comb and gently brushing the hair will help avoid breakage. Tight buns, braids, hair extensions, and other such elaborate hair styles can also cause the hair to break. Pulling it out on your own or leaving the hairstyle too long can cause hair and scalp damage or hair loss. In some cases, dry and brittle hair as well as hair loss can be a sign of poor nutrition or a medical condition such as hypothyroidism. Eat nutritious food packed with vitamins, minerals and proteins. If your hair is still breaking even if you take good care of it and eat healthy, you should see a doctor to determine if it is caused by a medical condition.

If your hair is breaking even though you don’t treat it with chemicals or other styling products, see a doctor.

Hair Loss

We all lose some of our hair on a daily basistypically when we shower or sleep. It is common to lose about 100 strands of hair a day; old hair fall out to be replaced with new and healthier hair. However, some people experience abnormal hair loss that thins the hair at a faster rate, which cannot be replaced naturally. This can caused baldness or bald patches. Abnormal hair loss, or alopecia, can be temporary or permanent. Some are caused by poor nutrition, a medical condition or is hereditary. You should consult your doctor if you are experiencing alopecia to determine its cause and if it can be treated.

Swiss reject single health insurance

Monday, March 12, 2007

24 of 26 Swiss Cantons rejected the proposal for a single health insurance system, in which premiums would be based on income and wealth. The vote on Sunday was the latest in a series of attempts to cut rising costs and ease the financial burden on citizens.

Around 71% of voters rejected the reform. Turnout was at about 46%, slightly above the Swiss average.

As expected, voters in the main German-speaking part of the country turned down the planned reform, which was supported by the centre-left but opposed by the centre-right as well as the business community, parliament and the government.

Opposition in the French and Italian speaking regions was less pronounced. The cantons Jura and Neuchâtel in the French speaking regions voted in favor of the proposed reforms.

Health insurance premiums are higher in southern and western Swiss cantons than in German-speaking areas.

The Swiss Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin said an important part of the Swiss Population appeared to be opposed to “a revolution” in health insurance but he said that he wanted current reforms currently under discussion in the Swiss Parliament to go ahead. He called on all sides, especially health insurers and the cantonal authorities, to make efforts to reduce spending on health insurance and aim for a greater cost efficiency. Currently Switzerland has 87 private insurers providing mandatory basic health care coverage for Swiss residents under a 1996 law. But costs have sky-rocketed. Over 100,000 people are not covered by health insurance due to non payment.

To win the battle of the cost of health care, everyone must place his or her private interests behind the interests of the general public. -Pascal Couchepin at a news conference

Opponents to the initiative argued that a single insurance system would lead to complacency and create a two-tier system, in which the wealthy would be the only ones available to afford to have additional private insurance coverage.

Supporters of the initiative said a single health insurer would increase the system’s efficiency and allow for annual savings of at least 300 million Swiss Francs (about $245 million) in administrative costs. Currently, the funding system is unbalanced, since many clients on low incomes use state subsidies to pay their premiums, according to the Green Party and the Social Democrats.

The initiative to unite all the insurance companies and introduce premiums based on wealth and income was the most recent in a series of attempts over the past ten years to reduce the public spending on health care. A proposal, similar to this recent proposal, to modify the funding system of the health insurance companies was rejected by 73% of voters in 2003.

Switzerland has the most expensive health system in Europe. Switzerland’s expenditure on health care was 11.6% in 2005, in front of Germany and France but behind the United States.
