South Korean president expresses willingness to supply COVID-19 vaccines to North Korea

Thursday, June 17, 2021

On Monday, during a state visit by the South Korean president to Austria, president Moon Jae-in said in a joint press conference with Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen, “If North Korea agrees, [we] will push proactively for cooperation on [COVID-19] vaccine supplies for it”.

Austrian President Van der Bellen agreed with Moon, speaking about united efforts of all countries to end the pandemic. He further said, “In case of any signal from North Korea [for requesting help], we will of course help.”

The status of COVID-19 in North Korea is unknown, as the regime still claims to have no case of the virus, a claim many foreign observers qualify as untrue. In an article by Daily NK, North Korean military authorities are reportedly “scrambling” to secure any doses of any vaccine to inoculate their military in a “military-first” effort, with multiple sources claiming up to 25% of the military has been placed in quarantine.

In the same article, Chinese medical supplies have reportedly been banned from use in Pyongyang hospitals after the death of an official who had received an injection of Chinese-made medicine. The exclusion of Chinese medicine may have also been applied to Chinese-made vaccines, such as the ones made by Sinovac and Sinopharm, furthered the article.

The visit was the first of its kind, as president Moon is the first South Korean president to make a state visit to Austria since the countries first opened diplomatic relations in 1892. Relations between the two countries will mark their 130th anniversary next year.

First winter snowfall in New Zealand

Saturday, June 4, 2005

Overnight Friday a Southerly storm brought snow to both the Southern Alps and the central North Island mountains of New Zealand for the first time this year, closing major roads and stranding travellers at the start of the Queens Birthday holiday weekend. Police and the AA urged motorists to drive with extra care and to the conditions this weekend.

In the North Island, State Highway 1 between Waiouru and Rangipo, the Desert Road was closed by deep snow at 3 PM on Friday afternoon. Other roads in the area, including other parts of State Highway 1 between Bulls and Turangi, State Highway 4, via National Park, and 49, via Ohakune, were closed at 8 PM.

These road closures stopped all traffic through the centre of the North Island. About 200 travellers were reported to have spent the night at the Waiouru Army Camp, being accommodated in the Marae and the Barracks. Grit trucks and snow ploughs worked overnight to clear the snow and reopen roads, with the Desert Road finally being reopened about 12:30 PM Saturday.

Together with a slip threatening to close State Highway 3 in the Manawatu Gorge and damage to State Highway 2 after floods in the Bay of Plenty a couple of weeks ago, the only reliable alternative route for travellers around the North Island was via Wanganui and Taranaki.

In the South Island, Police and the AA advised that chains were essential when travelling over the mountain passes.

Yesterday, Mount Hutt skifield announced it would be opening Saturday morning. Early Saturday morning, skiers were reported to be queuing at the gates of Mount Hutt skifield, eager to get the first opportunity to hit the slopes in 2005. Other South Island ski fields were also indicating June opening dates.

The weather outlook is for cold southerly winds and rain over the Queens Birthday holiday weekend, with snow down to 400m in the South Island.

Woman killed on amusement park ride in New York

Sunday, July 1, 2007

A young woman was killed Friday night after an accident occurred on a gyrating ride at the Playland amusement park in Rye, New York in the United States. The woman, Gabriela Garin, was a worker at the amusement park, and had worked there for the past seven years.

The accident occurred near the end of Garin’s shift; as she was loading riders onto the ride. The ride’s new operator, unaware of Garin’s presence, started the ride while Garin was still on it. The new operator then noticed Garin, and shut the ride down in 20 seconds, but Garin had already been ejected from the ride and killed, according to a park spokesperson.

The ride is an attraction that spins people around in two-seat cars, inside a darkened tent to flashing lights and music.

This incident is not the first in the ride’s history. In 2004, a seven-year-old from Connecticut managed to free herself from the ride’s restraining bars, and climb onto the front edge of her seat. She fell soon after the ride started. A safety precaution was put in place after this incident, however, the spokesperson acknowledged that it was not followed when Garin was killed.

The company which owns the ride shut it down, along with two other rides it owns at the park.

This is the fourth fatality in the park’s history. The park features more than 50 rides, a pool, and a beach. It attracts more than 1 million visitors annually.

Indonesia is to carry out DNA tests on the body of a man killed in the Temanggung district of Central Java. The body is believed to be that of Noordin Mohammed Top. Born in Malaysia, Top is believed to have been behind a string of terrorist attacks in Indonesia since 2002, including the 2002 Bali bombings and the bombing of the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels this July.

After a 16-hour siege, Indonesia’s elite Detachment 88 stormed a building in Beji village that police intelligence officers believe was occupied by Top and his group.

In an unrelated police raid two would-be suicide bombers were also killed; the target of their truck bomb was believed to be a residence owned by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Following a mass trial on August 1, at which critics of the Ahmadinejad regime were tried for sedition, Iran has on Saturday initiated a second mass trial of those it accuses of attempting to destabilise the Iranian state. Amongst the dozen accused are staff members of the British and French embassies and a French national. Both France and Britain have protested, with British officials calling the situation “completely unacceptable” and the French saying that the Iranian allegations were “absolutely baseless”.

In what have been described as show trials, opposition leaders have confessed to crimes against the state.

Samantha Orobator, a British 20-year-old from Peckham, London has been returned to the United Kingdom to serve out the remainder of a life sentence for drug smuggling. Convicted in Laos of attempting to smuggle 680g of heroin, Orobator initially faced execution by firing squad, which she escaped only when she became pregnant.

The circumstances of her trial and the circumstances of how she came to be pregnant has led to human rights organisation Reprieve to call for the quashing of her conviction. However the British government has indicated that it will honour its prisoner repatriation agreement with Laos.

Pakistani intelligence service sources state that Hakimullah Mehsud leader of Fedayeen al-Islam has been killed in a fight for the leadership of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) an al-Qaeda ally.

The statement comes a day after public speculation of the death of TTP leader Baitullah Mehsud in a drone attack on the 5th of August. Baitullah and Hakimullah are cousins with Hakimullah serving as a deputy to Baitullah. The TTP is a coalition of disparate groups and without the charisma and leadership of Baitullah, appears to have fallen victim to internal feuding. According to sources Hakimullah Mehsud met with rival Taliban leader Waliur Rehman to determine the succession, word at the shura became heated and led to a gunfight that resulted in the death of Hakimullah and the serious wounding of Rehman.

Hakimullah had earlier issued statements denying Baitullah’s death.

Hurricane Felicia has weakened to a tropical storm, but residents of Hawaii are continuing to monitor the storm’s progress as it approaches the islands.

Tropical storm watches were posted for portions of the state, and some beaches have been closed in anticipation of high surf. Meanwhile, emergency supplies were selling rapidly at local stores: “Things are just flying out”, said Vicki Lebowitz, manager of The City Mill in Oahu.

The storm, once a Category 4 major hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, is expected to further weaken before making landfall on Hawaii.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

Whenever a person loses their hair to alopecia, they seem to turn to whatever they can get their hands on. This usually comes in the form of a topical solution, shampoo or maybe even a hair transplant if they have the funds. It can be confusing and challenging to try to decide on a treatment to grow your hair back. Medical treatments are available but they can cause side effects. Surgical options can also stop your hair from thinning but these procedures are costly. Fortunately, home remedies for hair growth can be just as effective and are much more economical.

1. Since ancient times, Bringraj is recognized as the best ingredient in herbal hair loss treatment. This is the major herb used in the Ayurvedic hair treatment. Considered as an essential element for herbal hair supplements, it rejuvenates hair follicles, strengthens the hair roots, and hence provides protection against hair fall. It also prevents premature graying of hair and bald. It promotes re-growth of hair.2. Vitamins A, B, C and E are good hair growth promoters. The best way to get them is naturally through the foods you eat. There are several ways these vitamins work to promote hair growth. They provide sebum and promote blood circulation to the scalp by increasing oxygen absorption and collagen.3. Onions and garlic can be effective home remedies for hair growth. Both are good sources of sulphur, a mineral which stimulates hair growth. Take some onion bulbs or garlic cloves and gently rub them onto your scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.4. Hair loss often occurs when the connectivity between the three types of protein in the hair starts to break down. You must supply the body and the hair with protein to combat this. Eating lean proteins helps to regrow hair, but using protein on the hair stops the hair loss in the meantime. Here is a good recipe for shampoo that also contains henna, which is beneficial to add volume, shine and health to the hair.5. This is the second best essential herb used in Ayurvedic hair treatment. It helps growing your hair than normal if you can use it regularly. You can use it twice monthly as herbal pack on your scalp or you may use it processed within hair oil. In both of the cases, you will get good results and eventually you will be free from your hair loss problems.6. Proper Scalp Management: It is good to massage your scalp regularly with herbal oils. Use products like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. There are reports that alopecia areata can be effectively treated with essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.7. An apple vinegar rinse gives the hair shine and keeps it from breaking. This should be used as a conditioner after the henna shampoo. All you need is 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar and a liter of cold water. Mix the ingredients together and pour over the head while in the shower or leaning over a sink. Massage the hair and scalp for about 5 minutes. Rinse out with warm water. Follow up with your regular conditioner to remove the vinegar smell from your hair.

Bob Barker to retire as host of U.S. gameshow The Price Is Right

Friday, November 3, 2006

After hosting the United States gameshow The Price Is Right, Bob Barker has decided to call it quits and retire from being the gameshow’s 35 year-long host. Barker plans to end the show in June of 2007.

“I will be 83 years old on December 12 … and I’ve decided to retire while I’m still young,” jokes Barker. Explaining why he has been on American televisions for over 50 years, Barker said “I’ve gone on and on and on to this ancient age because I’ve enjoyed it.”

“I’m just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me. I might be able to do the show another year, but better [to retire] a year too soon than a year too late,” added Barker.

Barker first started to host gameshows in 1956 when he hosted Truth or Consequences and started to host The Price is Right on September 4, 1972 where, to this day, he has been the gameshow’s host.

Barker is hinting the possibility of appearing in a few movies, but jokes around saying he will not appear in any “nude scenes.”

“I refuse to do nude scenes. These Hollywood producers want to capitalize on my obvious sexuality, but I don’t want to be just another beautiful body,” said Barker in a joking manner.

CBS calls Barker a “legend” and an “entertainment icon.”

The first thing he plans to do after retiring is “sit down for maybe a couple of weeks and find out what it feels like to be bored,” said Barker.

“Bob Barker is a daytime legend, an entertainment icon and one of the most beloved television personalities of our time,” said Leslie Moonves, the chief executive of the CBS Network who also added that the network plans to do a special television show in Barker’s honor, but Barker will not be saying a special goodbye to his viewers saying he will say what he always does at the end of every show; “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.”

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank the television viewers, because they have made it possible for me to earn a living for 50 years doing something that I thoroughly enjoy. They have invited me into their homes daily for a half a century,” said Barker.

Jimmy Wales accused of editing Wikipedia for donations

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Friday, March 14, 2008

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has been accused of editing pages in the encyclopedia in return for a donation to the Wikimedia Foundation. In an article published Tuesday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that former Novell computer scientist Jeff Merkey alleged Wales had made edits to his article on his behalf, in exchange for a donation to the Wikimedia Foundation. The news hit the website Slashdot later Tuesday, where the incident was dubbed “DonorGate”.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Merkey claims that he was told by Wales in 2006 that the Wikipedia article about him could be made more favorable in exchange for a donation. Merkey made a donation of US$5,000 to the Wikimedia Foundation, and Wales made edits to the Wikipedia article about Merkey around the same time. Merkey published his claims on a public Wikimedia mailing list and sent a statement to The Associated Press.

Of course I would never offer, nor accept any offer, whereby a donation would buy someone special editorial treatment in the encyclopedia.

In a response Wales called Merkey’s statements “nonsense”, saying “Of course I would never offer, nor accept any offer, whereby a donation would buy someone special editorial treatment in the encyclopedia. I do routinely assist people with WP:BLP issues, and I do courtesies for many people. Donations have no bearing on that at all.” WP:BLP refers to Wikipedia’s policy regarding biographies of living persons on the encyclopedia.

After deleting the Wikipedia article about Merkey in 2006, Wales wrote to Wikipedia editors he had done so “because of the unpleasantness of it” and requested that they “be extra careful here to be courteous and assume good faith”. After erasing the article, Wales placed the article under protection with editing access limited to established users. Merkey ceased his $5,000.00 per year payments to the Wikimedia Foundation after reviewing what he called “evidence of diversion and mismanagement of the charities funds by Wales and the Wikimedia Board of Trustees”.

The Wikimedia Foundation, its staff and board members, and the users of Wikipedia itself hold the core principles of ‘no conflict of interest’ in the highest regard.

In a statement responding to a post about the incident on the site Techtree.com, Wikimedia Foundation’s Head of Communications Jay Walsh addressed the Foundation’s principles regarding conflict of interest: “The Wikimedia Foundation (the Foundation which operates and maintains Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects) has never solicited or accepted donations for the purposes of making edits or offering protection to Wikipedia articles. Nor has Jimmy Wales ever solicited or accepted donations for the Foundation in this capacity. These allegations are completely false. … Jimmy has been unfailingly ethical and frugal in the use of all Foundation funds. The Wikimedia Foundation, its staff and board members, and the users of Wikipedia itself hold the core principles of ‘no conflict of interest’ in the highest regard.”

After leaving Novell amidst allegations of misappropriation of trade secrets, Merkey was sued by his former employer. He filed a harassment lawsuit against organizations including the website Slashdot in 2005. Merkey filed a suit against Delta Air Lines and Natural Selection Foods in 2006, claiming his son had become sick from E. coli contaminated spinach.

Merkey is banned from editing Wikipedia due to a ruling by Wikipedia’s Arbitration Committee. The Wikipedia Signpost, Wikipedia’s community-written and community-edited newspaper, reported that a Wikipedia user account used by Merkey was blocked in October 2005 for “Personal attacks, legal threats, harassment, disruption”. Merkey was later allowed to come back to edit Wikipedia in May 2007 under a different account. As the result of a ruling by Wikipedia’s Arbitration Committe in a July 2007 arbitration case, Merkey and two users who had harassed him on Wikipedia were banned from editing the encyclopedia for one year.

Last week Jimmy Wales faced accusations by former Wikimedia Foundation executive Danny Wool that he misused the non-profit organization’s funds, and attempted to expense a visit to a Moscow massage parlor and high-priced bottles of wine. In an interview with CNET TV, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Sue Gardner described Wool as “a disgruntled former employee” and called his claims “a whole bunch of unsubstantiated rumors and gossip”. Wales’s former girlfriend, journalist Rachel Marsden, recently leaked purported instant message transcripts with Wales, which implied Wales had used his influence to change the article about Marsden on Wikipedia. Wales ended his relationship with Marsden and made a public statement to that effect on Wikipedia, and in response Marsden opened an auction for some of Wales’s clothing on eBay.

Understanding Wood Paneling Like A Pro

Understanding wood paneling like a pro by Wooderra Makris1. What is wood paneling?Wood paneling is made up of traditional solid wood, modern engineered wood boards or wood-like products put together in a large sheet or single planks. While engineered wood paneling consists of multiple boards and topped by a veneer layer of genuine wood, solid wood paneling is 100% of a single, solid type of wood in each individual board. Thus, the degree of authenticity between the two can be seen, which will come in handy when it comes to validating its value. An expert homeowner with high expectations and elegant tastes would be most inclined to go for solid wood paneling, especially the unfinished type, which does have an advantage over any type of pre- finished paneling. Wood paneling fits most interior styles, from commercial design, home applications, cottage architecture to the modern home.2. Different types and applications of wood paneling2.1 Wall panelingWall paneling which uses timber products makes an architectural statement that shows off your design savvy. Think about the old days when luxurious houses of the affluent used wood for wall paneling to show off their wealth. The sophistication of wood paneling is also found in yachts and luxury ships and vessels. When it comes to choosing wall paneling style, it is important to consider whether you prefer a painted or stained look.Painted wood is widely popular because it allows you the freedom to tailor your design ideas to suit your style. If you fancy a natural look, you can leave it as it is which allows the display of the knots and grain of the wood to be more vivid. This method also adds value to your home, as not painting the wood prevents the chemicals in the paints from altering inner characteristics of the material.2.2 WainscotingWainscoting is a paneling system which uses wood boards applied to the lower half of an interior wall.Because wainscoting is made up of wood, factors like expansion and shrinkage may occur. Depending on the type of wood you choose, real wood, hardwood and so on, the impact of these will vary because wood products respond differently to humidity and temperature conditions.Among the best suited woods for paneling is teak. Teak performs well in either wainscoting, walling or ceiling, because of its dimensional stability when glued together and applied on the structure framework.Wainscoting offers homeowners a wide variety of design choices which can be achieved using flat panels or beadboard, whether painted or natural.2.3 Ceiling panelingCeiling panels are designed to withstand pressure and to resist effectively to moisture conditions. Depending on the type of wood you chose, well-made celling panels are built for high performance that can withstand extreme room conditions which will guarantee a comfortable overall temperature and feel in any room.2.4 Exterior panelingBesides multiple materials available to build exterior paneling such as fiber cement or plastics, wood paneling proves to be highly sustainable and ecologically friendly. Exterior applications include balconies, outdoor wood siding, among others. Wood paneling lasts longer than vinyl siding and periodic maintenance is sufficient. Wood paneling for exterior applications is usually stained, although some prefer a painted look.3. Why wood paneling?Serving as a big design component in home building since the Victorian era, wood paneling was widely used in mid century homes, and it prevails in modern culture with stylistic adaptations. Technological advances in processing offers new choices, from classic to the contemporary design styles. Wood paneling is added as a decorative accent or to cover up damaged areas. It provides added value because it acts as an insulator, Wood paneling keeps the cold out, retains the heat inside, and also performs better at soundproofing than other materials, especially solid hardwood, like teak.Wood paneling, especially if solid wood, is more durable than wallpapers and wall paint. Solid wood paneling is also a greener choice because it is often harvested in man-made, sustainable forests, where various wood types are grown for multiple timber purposes in an ecologically sustainable manner. Moreover, because of its strong endurance, homeowners are less likely to purchase more wood panels over time, which in turn reduces consumption. With paneling, it is a clear-cut process of cutting, gluing to its base and nailing into your wall or ceilings. For DYI crowd who want to avoid paying expensive contractors, this is definitely an optimal choice.4. A few installation tipsTraditionally it was used on kitchen walls and entryways, but todaywood paneling can be found throughout the house, from bedrooms to libraries and in exterior applications like balconies, it has seen a resurgence in its uses and applications.A popular type of wood paneling is tongue-and-groove. The price of this type can be higher than sheet paneling, however, it is a worthy investment because the added value and attractive look will totally pay off afterwards. It is important to decide how you will lay the panels vertically and horizontally with careful measurement which should fit with the unity and structure of the house. It is advisable to reserve a small space of 1/16″ extension joint between each panel so that the panels can increase and decrease without stacking together in times of seasonal changes when temperature alteration is significant, say winter to summer and vice versa.Wood paneling is not as challenging as wood flooring, but if you are paneling the ceiling, being able to work on a ladder is a necessary, and should consider leaving it to professionals if necessary.
