Fur fans flock to Toronto’s Furnal Equinox 2019

Monday, March 25, 2019

From March 15 to 17, the Canadian city of Toronto played host to the tenth Furnal Equinox, an annual event dedicated to the “furry fandom.” Wikinews attended. Programming ranged from music to gender, science to art, covering dozens of aspects of the varied subculture. The event’s featured guests were visual artists Moth Monarch and Cat-Monk Shiro, as well as the co-owners of US fursuit costume builders Don’t Hug Cacti.

The event raised nearly CDN$11,000 for Pet Patrol, a non-profit rescue organization in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, run by volunteers. This exceeded their goal of $10,000, the funds needed to finish a rural sanctuary. The furry community is well-known for their charitable efforts. Along with direct donations, the funds were raised through a charity auction offering original artwork, and a fursuit design by guests of honour “Don’t Hug Cacti.” Last year, Furnal Equinox raised funds for a farm animal sanctuary.

While only 10–15% of people within the fandom own a fursuit according to a 2011 study, event organizers reported this year 908 of the 2240 attendees at Furnal Equinox brought at least one elaborate outfit to the event. The outfits are usually based on original characters, known as “fursonas”.

Guests of Honour Cherie and Sean O’Donnell, known within the community as “Lucky and Skuff Coyote”, held a session on fursuit construction on Saturday afternoon. The married couple are among the most prominent builders in the fandom, under the name Don’t Hug Cacti. The scale of their business was evident, as Sean had made over a thousand pairs of “handpaws”, costume gloves.

The couple encouraged attendees to continue developing their technique, sharing that all professional fursuit makers had developed different techniques. They felt that they learned more from failed projects than successful ones, citing the Chuck Jones quote that “every artist has thousands of bad drawings,” and that you have to work through them to achieve. Cherie, known as Lucky, recalled receiving a Sylvester the Cat plush toy from a Six Flags theme park at age 10. She promptly hollowed the toy out, turning it into a costume. Creating a costume isn’t without its hazards: the company uses 450°F (232°C) glue guns. They’re “like sticking your hand in an oven.”

Other programming included improv comedy, dances, life drawing of fursuiters, a review of scientific research by a research group at four universities called FurScience, a pin collector’s social, and workshops in writing.

The “Dealer’s Den” hall was expanded this year, with even more retailers and artists. While many offered “furry” versions of traditional products, at least one business focused on “pushing the boundaries of fursuit technology.” Along with 3D printing a bone-shaped name tag when Wikinews visited, Grivik was demonstrating miniature computer screens that could be used as “eyes” for a fursuit. The electronic displays projected an animation of eyes looking around, blinking occasionally. The maker has also developed “a way to install a camera inside suit heads, to improve fursuiter visibility.” He hopes the tech would reduce suiting risks and accidents. Without the need for eyeholes, fursuit makers would have “more options for building different eyestyles.”

How Cloud Computing Virtualization And Storage Can Be Helpful For Your Business?

How cloud computing Virtualization and storage can be helpful for your business?

by

runi

\”Cloud computing Virtualization\” consists of two technologies. The first one is the cloud computing technology, and the second one is the technology of Virtualization. It derived from the term virtual that means not, in reality; you cannot perceive it physically.

Virtualization creates a virtual (not real) platform for something, for instance a hardware platform, an operating system, storage devices, or networked resources. With this technology, we can enhance the calculating ability of any computer and server.

Platform virtualization denotes a virtual machine that will work like a factual computer consisting of an operating system. The host machine is the real machine on which the virtualization occurs, and the guest machine is the virtual machine. With desktop virtualization client connects to the host computer with another desktop through network connections like LAN, WLAN or the Internet.

Technology of virtualization reduces costs for staff, tools and software. With some available packages where you will simply control the license necessities, you\’re removing the need to send specialists to install the latest update.

It has made apposite for all workloads, even network demanding and high performance applications that would have earlier experienced conceded performance on any hypervisor.

Latest technological option:

VMware is a major and leading cloud operating system, renovating IT organizations into a private cloud. It consists of features like high availability, superior performance and cost-effective services are very much helpful for Small and medium businesses. It is to serve the necessities of the industries that need production-level performance and reliability.

What is cloud computing storage?

As according to the definition in Wikipedia: Cloud Storage is a prototype of networked online storage where the data is kept in virtualized pools of storage that are normally hosted by the third parties. Hosting providers run huge data centers and users who need server for hosting their data can lease or buy storage space. The operators in the data center can virtualize the assets conferring to the requirements from the client, and used by them for storing files or data. Tangibly, the resource may extend across multiple servers.

Services related to storage are accessed through three ways:

1. Web service application programming interface

2. Cloud storage gateway

3. Web-based user interface.

There are many advantages enjoyed by a user while using cloud computing storage services:

1. Users normally pay for the storage space used.

2. Companies and users do not have to buy huge priced data center or storage devices.

3. Service providers will look after works related to Storage maintenance such as, data backup, replication of data, and buying extra storage devices.

4. Instant access to a wide-range of data and applications hosted on the server of another organization with a web service interface.

With all these methods, your investment in IT is properly administered. With the help of cloud, data is kept externally in a secure place along with regular backups.

Hence, the need of cloud computing Virtualization and storage is very much necessary in any organization may it is small or big. The plethora of services provided by these technologies is just unimaginable, and we should try these services before commenting upon these services about their merits and demerits.

Takeover Saves Two Yorkshire Care Homes

Takeover Saves Two Yorkshire Care Homes

by

Kelsey Russel

Two

care homes in West Yorkshire will continue to provide a service to the elderly and infirm thanks to them being taken over by a newly-formed company.

P&C care Ltd s move to purchase the Ivy Nursing Home in Shipley and The Mount Nursing Home in Bolton Woods, Bradford, will also safeguard 84 jobs.

Patrick Berry, who is a qualified nurse with 17 years experience working for the NHS, and his wife Catherine, who has worked in finance and administration for nursing homes, will manage both of the 40-bed properties.

Mr Berry said: Having spent most of our lives working in the care home sector, we are passionate about providing the very best for our clients.

We look forward to continuing to operate these homes to a high standard and building on their excellent reputation and business success, as well as expanding and acquiring further homes in the future.

The purchases were made possible thanks to multi-million pound funding from National Westminister Bank and support from Reward Capital.

The news comes shortly after the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, announced a scheme which will see 150 million each invested into caring for the elderly.

A surprising number of people are paying for their own care in later life privately, according to new data.

Research by Laing & Buisson found that there has been a gradual but consistent decline in the number of people who qualify for state support.

In England in 2011, 41 per cent of care home residents, accounting for 159,000 people were responsible for paying for their own care.

If \’quasi private payers\’ who pay top up fees on top of what their local council pays were taken into consideration then this figure increased to 55 per cent.

Commenting on the findings, report author William Laing said that those who pay for their care privately and those who are state funded are experiencing very different market conditions.

\”Within the state paid sector, most councils froze their baseline fee rates in the face of swingeing cuts in central government funding,\” he said.

\”In contrast, the private pay market continues to bear significant fee increases.\”

Research from consumer site Which? recently highlighted that care in the UK is a postcode lottery, with many councils being advised to make their criteria for care needs more stringent.

An initiative to improve rehabilitation therapies in care homes in Derbyshire has picked up its third accolade in just two months.

Liberating Ideas competition, which is organized by the Health Service Journal and Cap Gemini (healthcare consulting organization), rewarded members from the Care Home Support Team at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust for the way in which they demonstrated new ideas in primary care.

Winning the national award now means that members of the team will be required to attend a workshop that will enable them to share their ideas for care with a panel of experts.

It is then hoped that such plans will be rolled out to other care groups and organisations across the country.

Sam Pessoll, team leader for the Care Home Support Team at Babington Hospital, told the Belper News: This is a fantastic opportunity for us and we are delighted that we ve been able to introduce a service which is making a real difference to the quality of life of elderly people in care homes in Derbyshire.

The scheme is a welcome addition to the health care sector at a time when the NHS is having to make several cutbacks.

Signs of de-escalation as Russia claims to pull back some troops

Wednesday, February 16, 2022

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The main agenda was the ongoing crisis near the Russian-Ukrainian border. On Monday, Scholz had visited Kiev, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and showed support to Ukraine against the Russian position.

After Tuesday’s meeting, a joint press conference was held, in which Scholz said, “it is our absolute duty as heads of government that Europe does not see an escalation into war.” When asked about the deployments and the threat of war, Putin said Russia does “not want war in Europe.” He later added Russia is “ready to work further together” and “go down the negotiations track”.

However, Putin called Russia’s claims valid and described the situation in Ukraine’s Donbas region as a ‘genocide’. On Tuesday, the Russian Defence Ministry declared it had begun to pull back some of its troops and called the deployments a ‘military drill’.

The German Chancellor said the withdrawal of some troops was a good sign. On the other hand, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said they wouldn’t accept any claims by Russia until they see it themselves and added “if we see a withdrawal, we will believe in a de-escalation”. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Russia’s response of a diplomatic solution but said it had not seen ‘any sign of de-escalation on the ground’ yet.

Men charged in US and Canada over alleged plot to arm Tamil Tigers

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

Numerous men have been charged in Canada and the United States with various crimes related to a plot to arm the Tamil Tigers who are listed as a terrorist organization in both countries. Some are accused of plotting to buy surface-to-air missiles and AK-47 rifles that would have been sent to the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. Eight people, including three Canadian citizens, were charged in Brooklyn, New York yesterday with various offences. At the same time the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested a 26-year-old in Ontario in relation to the plot. He faces extradition to the United States.

Charges against the nine include fundraising and money laundering through US bank accounts and charitable organizations for the Liberation Tigers of Talim Eelam, or Tamil Tigers, who have been fighting the Sri Lankan military in a civil war since 1983.

Two of the men allegedly tried to bribe undercover US State Department officials with $1 million in order to remove the Tigers from the official list of terrorist organizations which bars the group from raising money, obtaining weapons or lobbying. A more extensive investigation ensued involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The RCMP was brought in when the FBI learned of a Canadian allegedly being involved. Ultimately, the three Canadians arrested in the United States are accused of traveling to New York to purchase the military equipment including 50 to 100 SAM missiles, assault rifles, truck mounted missiles, aerial vehicles for jamming radio transmissions and radar, submarine design software as well as flight lessons and military training.

Cocaine found in frozen mango puree shipped to Montréal, Canada

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced Tuesday that they had seized approximately 160 kilograms of cocaine discovered in buckets of frozen mango puree imported from Mexico.

Investigations led the police to a shipping container destined for the Port of Montréal, in the Canadian province of Québec. A CBSA officer at the Container Examination Centre in Montréal identified the suspect container. The drug was found in brick-shaped plastic wrapping of about 4 kilograms in weight each. There were 1,200 buckets of frozen mango puree in the shipment, not all with cocaine inside.

RCMP Sgt. André Potvin told reporters that the value of the shipment was significant and was the largest maritime port drug haul in the force’s history. At CA$20 per half-gram, “that’s in the vicinity of $38 million,” said Potvin.

The investigation by the RCMP Drug Section, CBSA Intelligence officers, the Marine Security Enforcement Team and the Port of Montréal Security Group, determined that an import company, named Quality Mexport, was allegedly a front for the drug-smuggling operation.

Five Mexicans, holding visitor status in Canada, were arrested in the matter. They are:

 • Juan Manuel Huerta Canela, 31;
 • Jose Gerardo Bernal Vasquez, 52;
 • Jose Luis Navarro Ochoa, 33;
 • Jesus Manuel Villa Quiroz, 32; and
 • Alfonso Strag Estrada, age 50.

The suspects have been charged with importing and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. The charges are allegations at this point in time.

Vestas protesters sacked with immediate effect

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Eleven of the 25 workers at the Vestas factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, England who have been carrying out a sit-in since Monday July 20 have been sacked with immediate effect.

According to one of the protesters known as “Mike”, the occupiers were given their dismissal notices concealed under slices of their evening meal of pizza. The company said that the protesters have had ample opportunity to air their point of view, and had no choice but to sack eleven of the twenty five workers that they had positively identified; and that given that the fact that the action constituted a “fundamental breach” of trust, that the eleven would not be entitled to redundancy packages. A press release from the company said that Vestas “saw no other choice than to dismiss the 11 employees, who the company has positively identified as the employees currently participating in the occupation of the factory.”

The protesters remained upbeat, vowing to continue their occupation and have called upon the UK government to save the 625 jobs and to nationalise the Danish owned factory. Occupier Ian Terry told the BBC that if the occupiers are forced out, they plan to leave the building “peacefully”.

Vestas management were dealt a setback today in ending the occupation as Newport County Court ruled that the papers accusing the occupiers of aggravate trespass and requiring they surrender the office they occupy by July 29 were improperly served. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday August 4. In court, Judge Graham White said he was “distinctly uncomfortable” with what he perceived as Vestas’ effort to “get around the rules” in retaking the factory from the occupiers.

Legal representation for the Vestas workers had been offered by Bob Crow, secretary of the RMT trade union. Crow has pledged the “full solidarity” of the RMT and seven other unions with the workers occupying the plant.

Vestas management has also been providing the occupiers with hot meals in an apparent response to Crow’s announcement, made on July 24, that the RMT was planning on airlifting food into the factory by helicopter. Crow is meeting today with Ed Miliband, the Environment Minister.

Earlier in the week, Miliband pledged £6 million in funding to an expansion of Vestas’ Isle of Wight research and development centre, which currently employs 110 workers and could, said the Minister, be expanded to employ 40 more.

Rallies continued throughout the week in support of the Vestas occupiers. Since the occupation began, the Vestas workers have received declarations of support and solidarity from a wide swathe of the British left, including but not limited to: political parties Green Party, Respect, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party, the Alliance for Workers Liberty, and the Communist Party of Britain; the TUCG group, which brings together the BFAWU, FBU, NAPO, NUJ, PCS, POA, RMT, and URTU; and environmental groups Greenpeace, the Campaign against Climate Change, Climate Camp, and Workers’ Climate Action, who claims credit for initiating the campaign to occupy the factory. Attendees of the Big Green Gathering, a large annual environmentalist rally which was due to take place starting today but was suddenly canceled on Sunday, are being encouraged to go to the Isle of Wight and take part in support rallies for Vestas instead.

Speaking to Wikinews about the “redgreen” coalition supporting the occupation, a spokesman for the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty said: “We think this struggle is important on at least three grounds — it is central to the struggle for jobs, it is central to the struggle for the environment, and it is central to the struggle for rebuilding the labour movement.”

Photographs shared with Wikinews by the occupiers show the occupiers, mostly young men, talking, carrying out everyday tasks, and keeping in touch with the outside world via mobile phones. The use of mobile telephones in the Vestas occupation has given the press remarkable access to the occupiers and provided an effective platform for relaying their demands and feelings to the media. In contrast, Vestas’s designated media contact for the United Kingdom is on vacation. Attempts to reach Vestas Newport factory manager Patrick Weir, whom a Vestas representative at the company’s Danish headquarters stated was handling press inquiries regarding the occupation, received no reply.

Vestas plans to close the factory on July 31, citing the difficulties of obtaining planning permission for wind farms in the United Kingdom. All blades manufactured at Vestas’ Newport plant are sent to the United States. 1900 employees of the company in Northern Europe face job losses, 625 of them in Vestas’s plants in the south of England.
